National YMCA Progressive Gymnastics Program

(Ages 6 and up)
The objective of this program is to provide each individual the opportunity to develop their potential through an instructional program that encourages development of the total person-mentally, physically and emotionally. Participants gain self-confidence, develop personal responsibility, leadership understanding and learn to work together, respecting the rights of others. Each level of this comprehensive program will emphasize skill development, safety education, gymnastics foundation and execution keys and values education. All progressive gymnastics levels will practice skills on all four gymnastics apparatus: uneven bars, floor exercise, balance beam and vault.

Classes

Tiny Rollers & Rollers

These pre-beginning and beginning classes (respectively) teach the basic body positions: forward rolls, handstands, cartwheels and vault approaches. Bars skills covered include: front support, pullovers and pull-ups. Balance beam instruction will include: walking forward, backward, on toes, scales and small jumps. 45 minutes.

Swingers

This advanced beginners class will work on mastering all the beginners’ skills and will begin introducing the intermediate skills. 45 minutes.

Kippers & Flyers

These Intermediate & Advanced classes (respectively) will work on round-offs, back-bends, back-walkovers, leaps, jumps, turns and handstand vaults. Scales, arabesques leaps, jumps, will be covered on beam and bar content will be back hip circles, casts, pull-ups and leg ups. 45 minutes.

Pre-Team Gymnastics

Participants in this class must be able to perform a back walkover, scale, vault handstand and pullover on the bars. Pre-Team will start working on Level 4 skills to be able to compete on the level 4 competitive team. Try-outs will be in the Spring/late Summer as openings become available on the team. 75 minutes.

Gymnastics Team

Participants who have successfully progressed through pre-team may try out for the gymnastics team. In artistic gymnastics, athletes perform in four exercises; vault, balance beam, uneven bars and the floor exercise. They compete in their age group level with other YMCA athletes at home and away meets.

Boys Gymnastics

This NEW gymnastics class will be specifically geared toward boys ages 4 and up. The emphasis for this class will be on strength, flexibility and tumbling. We will also introduce the boys to the men’s rings. 45 minutes.
