There are a number of ways that someone can get involved in the YMCA and become mission partners as we strive to serve the community. Get Involved!

AS A MEMBER - Membership in the YMCA is a great way to meet friendly people while working out or participating in our youth or family activities. For more information see our membership page.

AS A VOLUNTEER - Volunteer opportunities abound at the YMCA. Whether it is coaching a youngster in soccer or basketball, determining policy on a committee or the Board, or caring for a baby in our Child Watch Center, we have a place for you. For more information, go to our contact page.

AS A CONTRIBUTOR - The Sidney Shelby County YMCA is a charitable, not-for-profit organization with a 501(c)3 IRS designation. We rely on the community to support our charitable activities through volunteerism and financial donations. There are many ways to be involved as a YMCA contributor.

The YMCA Heritage Club - A prestigious group of individuals who have supported the YMCA Endowment Fund with an outright gift of cash or securities, or who have made provisions for the YMCA in their estate planning. The group gathers once each year for dinner and fellowship. For more information on how you might become a member, contact Ed Thomas, Executive Director of the YMCA.

YMCA Financial Assistance - Our annual campaign which raises funds to provide assistance with the cost of membership and/or programs to youth and families who can't afford to pay. Assistance can range from a partial to a complete subsidy. Applicants are carefully screened and must meet financial guidelines to qualify. For information on the program or how to become a contributor, contact Maureen Woodson, Executive Director, Child Development Center.

Making a Difference in the Community we live

Open-Door policy- Approximately 1400 individuals each year receive full or partial assistance for memberships and programs participation.  Assistance helps provide opportunities for such things as Teen Leadership programs, swimming lessons, child care and many other vital services and programs.  We continue to make our facility available to students from Lowell, Longfellow, and Central schools and other youth who have completed the past Y Partners leadership program.

Parenting Education Class- This three hour class meets at no cost each week at the YMCA for two ten week sessions per year.  Classes teach parents and children positive ways to strengthen their families.

Sidney-Shelby County Opportunity School- This program increases H.S. graduating rates by dealing with students that are at risk from dropping out.  Our YMCA facility allows them to use our gyms for creative P.E. Classes at no cost.

Military Memberships- Family members of deployed enlisted military personnel receive a full six-month membership, which can be renewed upon verification of current enlisted status.

Multiple Sclerosis- Individuals from out community afflicted with this illness are able to participate free of charge in our twice-weekly MS swim exercise class (as part of the PACE program).

Saturday Night Live- Activity night for students kindergarten through grade six and their families sponsored by the YMCA and the City of Sidney Parks and Recreation Department from November to March each year.

Shelby County ARC- Adults and children are allowed to come to the YMCA at scheduled times to utilize facilities as a way to provide them with fun and rewarding activities.

Water Safety Week (Splash) - Close to 600 children participate in a week-long program designed to teach water safety skills, rescue skills, basic swimming skills, and character development.  We know of at least two instances where parents have credited this program with saving lives of their children.
